Regardless of background, every child deserves access to a great education. This includes students for whom English is a second-language.
The English Language Learner (ELL) population in public schools has exploded over the past decade and is expected to grow exponentially in the years ahead. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, an estimated 4.7 million children were classified as ELL in 2010-2011, up from 4.1 million in 2002-2003. As their numbers grow, so to do concerns about the achievement gap between ELLs and their peers. Charter schools and authorizers can and should play an important role in making sure these students have access to great educational opportunities.
This webinar is a conversation about protecting the rights of ELLs with Sunil Mansukhani, principal of the Raben Group and former deputy assistant secretary at the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights (OCR). Hosted jointly by NACSA and the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, this web-based session will provide authorizers and charter school operators with critical information about the rights of ELLs and practical strategies for ensuring that those rights are upheld.
