Active, rigorous, transparent, consistent, and ongoing oversight and evaluation of each school’s academic, financial, and organizational performance throughout the charter term is an essential element of high-quality authorizing. The goal of ongoing oversight and evaluation is to assure school quality not by managing schools directly but by holding them accountable for meeting their performance expectations and for fulfilling their obligations to students and the public. This course provides an overview of the essential elements of a strong system for ongoing oversight and evaluation, the importance of respecting school autonomy while maintaining strong accountability, and the critical role of authorizers in protecting student rights and the public interest.
