Righting the Wrong: Authorizing School Turnaround Efforts
Is closing a failing school the only option for ending the cycle of underperformance? Or is there a perfect storm of conditions that make turning around or “restructuring” a failing school better than closure? Can charter school turnarounds succeed? What conditions should an authorizer look for when considering turnaround? This session examines how restructuring or turnaround strategies can hold the adults accountable while minimizing the disruption to students when a school fails to succeed. Authorizers and a charter operator share their experiences in school turnaround efforts and offer insights on process, conditions and early performance data, and facilitate a conversation about turnarounds as a school reform strategy.
